Workshop Purpose
The purpose of the "Regional Workshop on Energy Infrastructure Resilience" is to identify issues and concerns related to improving the resiliency of energy and energy-dependent critical infrastructures within a six-state subset of the Appalachian Region. The subset includes Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. The workshop will stimulate collaboration among regional infrastructure groups by focusing on:
- Initiating dialogue among private and public sector stakeholders for planning and developing programs for the prevention, protection, response, and recovery aspects of energy infrastructure resilience and interdependencies with other infrastructures (e.g., Financial, Healthcare, Transportation, Communications, Water Resources, Food Safety)
- Improving resiliency of energy interdependent critical infrastructures in the region to withstand large-scale disasters or terrorist attacks
- Improving response to large-scale emergencies involving damage to regional infrastructures with energy interdependencies
- Identifying research and development required to improve and support critical infrastructure resiliency
Workshop Product
The primary focus of the workshop will be the energy sector and its interdependency with other infrastructure sectors. The outcome of the workshop will be a report that will include:
- Identification of regional issues and concerns about critical infrastructures and interdependencies with energy
- Identification of applicable resources and expertise in the region leading to the development of a regional critical infrastructure resilience alliance for energy and energy-interdependent infrastructures. Recommendations for collaborative research and development
- A framework for a regional cross-sector alliance and regional collaboration to improve resiliency and preparation for emergency response involving critical infrastructures
- Recommendations for future workshops and conferences to support regional collaboration
Participants
Participation in the workshop is by invitation. The number of participants is expected to be about 50. Invited participants will represent state and local governments, academic institutions, federal government agencies, and private sector entities. Workshop organizers will solicit issues and concerns in advance of the workshop to help organizers and speakers focus on topics that are relevant to participants.
Workshop Organizers
The workshop organizers are West Virginia University, University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory with participation from other organizations.
